How does the IBAN check work?

Every IBAN contains two check digits (positions 3 and 4). They are calculated with the "mod 97" method over the whole number, so almost every typo is detected.

A valid IBAN only means that the number is correctly built. It does not confirm that the account exists or who owns it. Since October 2025 European banks check the name against the IBAN when you make a transfer ("verification of payee").
